A cobbler is a man or woman who repairs and restores shoes as a profession. Even though they are not as common as they were in the olden days, they still do exist and are very much in business. They are sometimes known as shoemakers probably because in the past they used to make shoes as well. These days however, they specialize in repair and restoration and very few are manufacturers as well.

In order to become a cobbler, you will need to take some time to acquire the necessary skills and this is done in two ways. The first is by learning from a skilled cobbler and this involves learning on the job. This is how the trade was passed down from generation to generation and you will need to find a cobbler who is willing to teach you. Completely mastering the art will take a while and so you will have to be patient. There are many different types of tools used and so you will have to learn what each one of them is used for and how it is used. In most cases, those who take up being a cobbler as a career will normally learn from a family member.

There are still some cobbler schools in existence and so another way acquiring the cobbler skills would be to attend a cobbler school. If you are not sure about where to begin looking for such schools, a good place to start would be the internet. By entering the words cobbler school into a search engine, several results will be returned and so you will not only find any schools near you but also a lot of information about the whole process as well. Most of the schools will hold cobbler workshops where people are trained and also get to interact with other cobblers. The training will teach people on how to repair modern styled shoes which is a very important art to master if you are to be successful. This is because most of the shoes that will be brought to you for repair will be modern shoes.

The salary earned by a cobbler will obviously vary depending on where they are based, whether or not they have an employer and their skills or experience. The more experienced one becomes, the more they are likely to earn because they will be able to produce better quality shoes. This will result in more clients or better paying ones and hence higher income is generated. The longer one has been a cobbler will also make them more widely known and so they will have several repeat customers meaning steady business.

The best thing to do if you want to take up a career as a cobbler is to acquire the necessary skills and then start you own shop. This is because you will earn a lot more if you are self employed than you would if you were working for someone. After a while you can take another step and become an employer. For this you will have to look for an apprentice whom you will train so as to make sure that they do things the right way.
